Ferrum Fungi

Project #7209

This project focused on learning if mushrooms can help with environmental remediation of mine tailings. This was done by mixing straw samples contaminated with metal sulfates with blue oyster mushroom spawn. At the local University an atomic absorption spectroscopy analyzer was used to detect the amount of each metal absorbed by the mushrooms. This matters because many areas in Sudbury and around the world are polluted with mine tailings which can cause diseases to humans and kill plants and animals. My studies demonstrate that blue oyster mushrooms are capable of absorbing metals from a contaminated environment and could be used in environmental remediation of mine tailings.
