Project
Coastal Defence — Holding Back Climate Change
Project #7102
In this project, I tested coastal defences in a wave tank with simulated waves and multiple water levels to see how well they would be able to protect coastal communities from flooding. I used current and future water levels to show how rising water levels could affect coastal communities over time. Sea levels are rising because sea ice is melting, and oceans are expanding. While all defences worked well at today’s water level, many deteriorated when the water rose, which is what I expected. The best defence was the Slanted Wall, which blocked nearly all the water, and the worst defence was the Small Wall. I designed four new defences: one based on my research, and three that I created after testing. With my experiment, I was able to prove which defences would be better able to protect coastal communities from rising waters and related dangers.
