Project
A.H.H. Breathe Easy — The Automated Hodder Hug
Project #5212
Our project aims to mechanize and improve on a manual way to squeeze air out of the lungs. People with respiratory illnesses - such as asthma - don't have the ability to exhale on their own when ventilated. This causes air to become trapped in the lungs, which can lead to lung damage, heart damage, and even death! We built a device, controlled by code, that goes around the chest of a patient, working with the ventilator to help the expiration of trapped air. We ran tests and our results showed that our device helps reduce air trapping in the lungs. We verified with doctors and respirologists that air trapping is currently managed in ways that can harm the patient, so our device would be a great addition to the medical toolbox!
