Pixels to Predictions: Machine Learning Phenotypic Clustering of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
Project #5325
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a genetic heart disease that causes the heart muscle to thicken abnormally, which can lead to serious problems like heart failure or sudden cardiac death. Right now, doctors predict a patient’s risk using just one max wall thickness measurement, but the issue is that this crude measurement isn't always accurate. To address this, my project used 3D models created using cardiac MRI scans and took hundreds of measurements across the heart. Then, I used machine learning algorithms to cluster patients based on the measurements taken. Using this approach, I identified one group that had a much higher chance of developing future heart issues. Overall, this approach I created is more precise than current methods, and it could help doctors find high-risk patients more accurately and give them better, more individualized care.
