Truth Unearthed: Investigating the prospect of mycorrhizal fungi for sustainable forestry
Project #9302
Mycorrhizal fungi are considered vital aspects of woodland ecosystems, as they are said to greatly benefit trees. However, this may not be the full truth. This project investigates if mycorrhizal fungi are the key to achieving sustainable forestry, through expanding on original research conducted in the previous year. An increased sample size of 30 plots, all within a naturally regenerated forest, is utilized to determine if these organisms truly have a significant impact on forests. The soil from each plot underwent microscopic analysis of the mycorrhizae (root tips) and fungal species. With this data, the correlation between mycorrhizal fungi and tree height, abundance and diameter was explored, as well as species diversity overall. These updated observations equally allow an investigation as to whether mycorrhizal relationships have a short-term effect on ecosystem prosperity. Ultimately, this study widens our comprehension of mutualistic relationships and provides an unexpected conclusion to this underground mystery.
