BreathWell: The Development of a Breath Coaching Device for Cancer Treatment Support

Radiotherapy is an important way to treat cancer patients. During the radiotherapy treatment in breast or lung cancer, breathing causes the cancer tumor to move. This can lead to healthy organs being exposed to radiation. A solution for this is that the patient can hold their breath, but the duration required is not easily achievable without coaching. I decided to fix this problem by creating a portable breath coaching device along with an android app to plot real-time results as such a device does not exist. The medical staff would tell them where to hold their breath and how long, and the patient will use the device to adjust the parameters to their needs and coach themselves. This device is important because it enables patients to breathe at a consistent depth, which is required in the treatment as it will be performed expecting the patient to breathe regularly.
