Project

Tactile ASL Robotic Hand

Project #4301

Human brains acquire 90% of information from only two senses: sight and hearing. Deafblindness is a condition which involves a combination of visual and hearing loss. Over 160 million people are deafblind, making up 2% of the world population as well as over 602,160 Canadians. Assistive technology for translation can cost around $5,000. Without this privilege, there is immense difficulty in communication, mobility, and learning by limiting a person’s access to information. This often leads to feelings of isolation and low self-esteem. The Tactile ASL Robotic Hand is an anthropomorphic robotic hand which can translate English to tactile ASL and vice versa. It can sign in tactile ASL by conveying information through touch with 3D-printed fingers driven by servo motors, and recognize ASL signs using a camera to output info in English. The hand empowers people who are deafblind to access information and communicate with non-ASL users.
