Pollution in the Pond: The Heavy Metal Crisis
Project #7208
My project researches the effect of Heavy Metals - specifically lead(II)nitrate and nickel(II)chloride - on the freshwater organism Daphnia Magna (aka water fleas). Significant impacts were seen on the Daphnia's heart rate and survival rate, highlighting the toxic effect of these chemicals on freshwater ecosystems. This is important because the findings show our heavy metal waste's worldwide impact on ecosystems and communities. I researched the regions most impacted by the pollution of our world's water and explored how Daphnia magna can be used as a low-cost tool to test the quality and safety of freshwater.
