Beneath the Surface- A Regional Study of Atomic Particles (Radiation Frequency) and Radon in Soil
Project #7216
For the longest time I've been curious about the invisible world of radiation. My passion for Physics led me to a device called a cloud-chamber, where I can view atomic particles in real-time. Through my research I learnt radon is a radioactive gas that forms through the atomic decay series, and it's in our soil. My experiment focused on the Southern Interior Plains, a region with some of the highest levels of radon in Canada. I collected soil samples from Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Stored them in air-tight containers, allowed them to release radon, and tested them using my cloud-chamber. Manitoba had the highest level of radon (radioactive activity). Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the world. I hope my research will inform people and policy makers about this hidden risk, so they can help make changes towards a safer environment.
