A Potentially Selective, and Cost-Effective Multi-Targeted Anti-Melanoma Drug Therapy

I worked with natural compounds such as those found in turmeric and willow bark to formulate a more selective, effective and economical option for treating melanoma, which is an aggressive skin cancer. The current options for treatment are extremely expensive, provide harsh side effects and are often met with the cancer cells becoming resistant; thus, I looked to find a more selective, and cost effective multi targeted therapy. I assessed how effective these natural compounds were, independently and in combination, to inhibit melanoma cells from growing in vitro methodology. Ultimately, I found that certain combinations of these natural compounds were significantly more effective in inducing apoptosis in cancer cells in combination than in isolation. This suggests that combinations of the natural approaches may prove more effective and non-toxic than synthetic options. They open doors for better approaches in the future that are inexpensive and easier.
