The IV Roller: A Simple Approach to Pain Management of Phlebitis during PIVC Chemotherapy Infusion
Project #5309
Chemotherapy is the dominant approach to cancer treatment and is frequently administered through the veins of the hands and forearms. In 70% of patients, this will cause phlebitis -- inflammation of the vein, causing a burning, itching sensation along the course of the vein. Especially in pediatric chemotherapy, where children have greater pain sensitivity and smaller veins, phlebitis is an unaddressed concern. The IV Roller can be rolled along the forearm before, during and after chemotherapy to prevent and address phlebitis-related pain. It has a rolling head, which can bear a heat or cold pack, and a scratching attachment, which mimics the feeling of nails running along the skin. The IV Roller manipulates the brain into perceiving less phlebitis-related pain by creating a non-painful sensation in the same area. In the future, the device strives to improve the pediatric cancer patient experience by reducing phlebitis-related pain during chemotherapy infusion.
