Project
Toxic Sip: Hydroponic Cultivation in Contamination
Project #2102
The idea for this project originated from the long-term Boil Water Advisory in my town, Leaf Rapids, Manitoba, which has been in place since August 21, 2013. There have been instances where people became sick from drinking contaminated water in my town. So, I decided to investigate whether contaminated water would affect plant growth. I also wanted to explore a solution to food insecurity in Northern communities of Canada, where the growing season is very short. Therefore, I decided to grow radish plants using the hydroponic method. I used water from four different sources: two lakes around town, the town’s water supply, and reverse osmosis (RO) water. I conducted the experiments for three months. My first discovery was that contaminated water did not affect plant growth. I also found that hydroponics is a promising solution for growing food in areas having trouble getting fresh produce and facing food security challenges.
