Health & Wellbeing
Here are some tips to help you stay healthy and at the top of your game during the fair.
Staying healthy
Participating in the Canada-Wide Science Fair is an exciting and rewarding experience, but it can also be demanding. Maintaining your physical and mental health throughout the week is crucial to perform your best and fully enjoy the experience.
Physical Health
Eat Balanced Meals
- Take advantage of the delicious meals provided during the week. Try to include a balance of proteins, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables in every meal – don’t just skip straight to dessert!
- Bring some extra snacks from home if you usually need a mid-afternoon pick-me-up.
Stay Hydrated
- Keep your CWSF water bottle with you and drink regularly. Staying hydrated is essential, especially if you’re speaking frequently or the venue is warm.
- Limit intake of caffeinated beverages, as they can lead to dehydration and increased anxiety.
Get Enough Sleep
- Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Good sleep helps improve concentration, memory, and mood.
Practice Good Hygiene
- Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, especially before eating and after using the washroom.
Health & Safety
- We respect a participant’s decision to wear a mask should they wish to do so. We encourage participants who choose to wear a mask to bring enough for the week. Disposable masks will be available at the Information Desk in the Project Zone if needed. All participants are expected to respect personal choices regarding masks.
- If you are sick or experiencing any COVID or influenza-like symptoms, please do not attend the CWSF. Let your delegate(s) or ambassador know if you are feeling unwell, and they will be able to support you and take any necessary steps.
Mental Health
Manage Stress
- Identify stressors and develop coping strategies, such as deep breathing, meditation, or talking to a friend or mentor.
Take Breaks
- Give yourself short breaks throughout the day to relax and recharge. Even a few minutes away from your project or preparation can be beneficial.
Stay Connected
- Keep in touch with family and friends back home. Sharing your experiences and challenges can provide support and perspective.
- Engage with other participants. Sharing and listening to each other’s experiences can build camaraderie and reduce feelings of isolation or competition stress.
Seek Support
- If you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or unwell, don’t hesitate to seek support from your delegate(s), an ambassador, a member of Team UV, or one of our volunteers.
- Remember, it’s okay to ask for help. The fair is about learning and growing, not just competing.
Participating in the CWSF is an incredible opportunity to showcase your hard work and passion for STEM. By taking care of your physical and mental health, you’ll be better prepared to enjoy and make the most of this unique experience.
Support services
To ensure you have access to the assistance and resources you need, a variety of support services are available before, during, and after the fair. Here’s an overview of the support services designed to help you navigate the event successfully and healthily.
On-site Medical Assistance
- First aid and medical professionals are available on-site during the fair to address any immediate health concerns or emergencies. Locations and contact information for these services will be provided in your welcome package and clearly marked at the event.
Accommodations for Special Needs
- The CWSF is committed to being an inclusive event. Participants with disabilities or special needs can request accommodations to ensure full access to fair activities and facilities. Early communication with Team UV is encouraged to arrange necessary support.
General Assistance and Inquiries
- For any questions or concerns during the fair, visit the information desk. The staff can provide directions, help with schedule and event information, and offer assistance with a wide range of issues.
Lost Items
- A lost and found service is available for participants who have misplaced personal items. If you lose something, report it to the information desk or a member of Team UV as soon as possible, and check back regularly in case your item is recovered.
